The South Carolina Republican Party sued this week to close primary elections after legislation creating a closed system failed to get any traction at the Statehouse this year. A hearing was held in January for two dueling GOP proposals. But even the main sponsor of the bill backed by the state party said neither should advance amid the GOP “civil war” between the two proposals.

Cities and towns across the country have revived juvenile curfews and increased police patrols in response to an apparent uptick in large teen gatherings and fights organized through social media, our affiliate Stateline reports. The included a reference to South Carolina communities, without any details, so I asked Skylar to write about what’s happening in the Palmetto State.

It’s that time of year again. The annual sales tax holiday falls a little later on the calendar. Under the 26-year-old state law, it starts at 12:01 a.m. on the first Friday in August. Online sales are tax-free too.
