The job of comptroller general is another one of those down-ballot contests voters often don’t think about. And historically, it doesn’t get much public attention, though the discovery of multibillion-dollar errors changed that after the last election. Hear from the two candidates running to be the state’s chief accountant.

Early voting continues today.

The race to be South Carolina’s next comptroller general pits a certified public accountant in the state agency against the founder of a company that tracks healthcare data. Democrat Tiffany Boozer argues the agency needs a CPA at the helm. Republican Mike Burkhold argues he has the expertise needed in information technology and running a company. It’s the first open contest for the job in 28 years.

COMMENTARY

By Craig Sorensen

The president of South Carolina Water Utilities writes about the utility's formal consolidation this year with Blue Granite and pledges that system improvements will continue. “Local teams remain focused on the communities they serve, but they now have greater resources at their disposal when challenges arise,” he writes. (As Jessica reported in July, the joint company is trying to reverse Blue Granite’s reputation for high bills, sewage spills and water outages.)
