High school seniors across South Carolina are newly eligible for scholarships enabling them to earn a college degree with little-to-no debt under a partnership approved in the state budget. An $18.7 million commitment by the Legislature will expand Meeting Street Scholarships to 32 counties for the Class of 2027 through an 80-20 split.

A man convicted of shooting a South Carolina trooper in the face during a traffic stop will spend a total of 45 years in prison in combined state and federal sentences. A federal judge gave 40-year-old Derrick Gathers a higher sentence than typically recommended under the legal guidelines because the crime was shockingly terrible and due to his history of violence, she said.
