Tomorrow is a holiday for us, since Independence Day falls on Saturday. I’m guessing that’s the case for many of y’all, too. And I’m hoping to actually take the day off — after I send the newsletter. That will arrive in your inbox like normal.

A new law that takes effect Oct. 1 further expands who's eligible for up to six weeks of paid parental leave in South Carolina and clarifies that mothers of stillbirths qualify for the time off. (Skylar covered that unfortunate dispute last year.) The law signed this week builds on the state’s initial paid leave law passed in 2022. For fathers, it doubles their paid time off.

In his latest commentary, Paul Hyde writes about South Carolina’s outsized role in the Revolutionary War with some lighthearted regional rivalry. Last weekend, celebrations focused on the Lowcountry’s role, obviously, with the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Sullivan’s Island. But as Paul reminds us, the Upstate played a huge role too. After all, the Battle of Cowpens is considered a turning point in the war. (I admit: I laughed out loud when I read the last line.) It’s meant to be humorous, so, as he writes, don’t take offense.
