Darline Graham Nordone will finish out the term of her older brother, the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, who adopted and raised her following their parents’ deaths. The announcement came a day after news of Graham’s death shocked the nation and beyond. The article includes a section on other women who fulfilled terms in Congress. After seeing some comments on social media, I wanted to add that context. It’s not uncommon for a loved one to fill a vacancy. The difference is that, in other instances, widows were appointed or elected. Graham wasn’t married. Read about the siblings’ close relationship, including from his Graham’s own words. Her appointment lasts until January. A special GOP primary next month will decide who will be on November’s ballot for the next six-year term.

The South Carolina 7 is a month of expeditions named for the state's "seven geographic wonders." The public is invited to join in the daily adventures through the end of July. Pick a day and get outside! Skylar participated in a 3-mile riverwalk yesterday. (Today’s adventure is a hike at Congaree National Park, but it started at 9 a.m., so it’s too late to join.) The treks are led by the director of the state Department of Natural Resources, and the nonprofit organizer could receive $300,000 in the state budget to support the annual event (depending on what happens with negotiations between the House and Senate).
