According to their campaigns, U.S. Rep. Russell Fry is filing for U.S. Senate at the state elections office at 10 a.m., and U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman is filing at 12:30 p.m. Both have already announced their bids. Today, they’re submitting the necessary paperwork and paying the fee to actually get on the ballot. They join five candidates who filed earlier this week. The filing deadline for candidates wanting to compete in the Aug. 11 special GOP primary is noon Tuesday.

Former Gov. Mark Sanford announced yesterday he’s joining the race to replace U.S. Senate Lindsey Graham on a pledge to “get Washington’s finances back in order.” Earlier this year, he launched a bid to win the U.S. House seat he held before and after his tenure as governor, only to drop out a month later. The South Carolina Republican Party also made an announcement yesterday: It’s sponsoring a televised debate two days before early voting starts.

Congratulations to Riley Metcalfe, a rising ninth grader from Greenville who will represent South Carolina in the National Civics Bee later this year. More than 100 middle schoolers statewide entered South Carolina’s inaugural year of the contest. Former Gov. David Beasley moderated yesterday’s competition. The questions were tough. See if you can answer the one Skylar led with in her article. Congratulations to all the finalists! (I can’t help but note that one is from my hometown of Williston. 🙂 I promise I did not know that when I made the assignment.)
