Happy Friday!

Three candidates competing for U.S. Senate will debate at 7 p.m. Sunday: Democrat Annie Andrews, Republican Darline Graham and Libertarian Kasie Whitener.

South Carolina ETV will broadcast the one-hour debate from its studios in Columbia. There will be no public audience. But there are multiple ways to watch it. In addition to airing on SCETV’s TV and radio channels, the debate will be streamed on SCETV.org as well as the network’s Facebook page, YouTube channel and app.

The father of a 22-year-old killed in Columbia last year sat down with federal and local officials yesterday in a public push for "Logan's Law," which would create a national database accessible to the general public of people convicted of violent crimes. The legislation has yet to get a hearing on Capitol Hill. The gathering in Charleston, one month before the midterms, included the U.S. attorney general and the legislation’s congressional sponsors.

Last year’s law didn’t set a penalty for failing to provide the uninterrupted planning time. The Senate education chairman says that may need to change.

COMMENTARY

By John Kupfer

University of South Carolina geography professor John Kupfer writes about Congaree National Park and its 50 years of federal protection. “In a world where many natural systems have been fragmented or lost, Congaree preserves a sense of continuity that is difficult to find elsewhere,” he writes. The park's 50th anniversary celebration is Oct. 17-18.
